Mr. Jas Sandhu
(BSc Hons, MB ChB, MClinRes, Cert LRS, FRCOphth)
Mr. Jaswant Sandhu is one of the leading ophthalmic surgeons in the North East, renowned for his expertise in cataract surgery, anterior segment and external eye diseases, as well as corneal transplantation.
Currently, Mr. Sandhu is the lead Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Through his NHS and private work, Mr Sandhu has successfully performed over 10,000 cataract and vision correction procedures, placing him among the most experienced surgeons in the region.
Mr. Sandhu completed his post-graduate ophthalmic training in Newcastle and earned a Clinical Research Master’s degree with distinction from Newcastle University. He further honed his skills at the prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, where he obtained a fellowship in anterior and external eye diseases and surgery. Additionally, he holds certification in Laser Refractive Surgery from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (CertLRS).
He is passionate about teaching and training and has served on national Training Groups and currently acts as both a clinical and educational supervisor for the next generation of eye surgeons. His dedication to advancing patient care and surgical techniques led to Mr. Sandhu performing the first corneal transplantation in Newcastle upon Tyne of a Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK), successfully carried out. He has shared his expertise at both national and international conferences, presenting his work and contributing to the global ophthalmic community.
